Inese Lībiņa-Egnere: international law played an essential role in the restoration of Latvia’s independence
“Latvia strongly believes in international law. This belief is rooted in our experience of being able, under international law, to reinstate our statehood after 50 years of occupation,” stressed Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, on Thursday, 8 September, when opening the 12th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) at the Latvian National Library. This year the prominent legal forum focused on how international law works in times of crisis.

Parliamentarians of the Baltic Sea region call for closer integration of education and the labour market
On Tuesday, 30 August, in Riga parliamentarians of the countries of the Baltic Sea region stressed the need to establish closer cooperation in education so as to integrate the education system with the labour market. The parliamentarians adopted the Resolution of the 25th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) emphasising the role of education in improving the region’s competitiveness.

Mūrniece at the NB8 speaker meeting: we should work together to prevent hybrid threats

Speakers of Baltic and Nordic parliaments to visit Georgia next year
To show their solidarity, the speakers of parliament of the Baltic States and the Nordic countries (NB8) will pay a joint visit to Georgia upon the invitation of the country’s speaker of parliament. The agreement was reached by the speakers of the parliaments of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden on Monday, 22 August, at the annual conference of the speakers of parliament of the NB8 countries that this year takes place in Riga.

We owe gratitude to no one else but ourselves for the restoration of Latvia’s independence: it was our fight and our victory. The 1991 August events for Latvians, Estonians, and Lithuanians were a fight for their freedom, democracy, and independent state, as well as for values, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Sunday, 21 August, at the ceremonial event at the Monument of Freedom, as she addressed the audience on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the de facto restoration of the statehood of Latvia.
