On Wednesday, 16 June, the Saeima adopted in the second and final reading urgent amendments to the Law on Higher Education Institutions. The amendments provide for the possibility for students from families with at least three children to receive support in the form of social scholarships allocated from the state budget funds.

On Wednesday, 16 June, the Saeima approved Juris Pūce as the Head of the Latvian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-​operation in Europe (OSCE PA).

On Tuesday, 15 June, the Saeima adopted in the final reading a new law on debt relief for natural persons, as well as relevant amendments to other laws.

On Thursday, 10 June, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Personal Identification Documents Law, whereby, starting from 2025, the eID card will be a mandatory personal identification document for persons living abroad.

On Friday, 21 May, Members of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima supported Latvia’s national position in the extraordinary European Council meeting on the introduction of the EU Digital COVID Certificate in the European Union (EU), climate change issues, as well as relations with Russia and the United Kingdom. 

Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, concluded her official visit to Ukraine by visiting the Donetsk region in Eastern Ukraine with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Razumkov.

Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, is on an official visit to Ukraine. In Kiev, she met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, who thanked the Latvian Parliament for the active support for the Crimean Platform.

These days when we remember the crimes committed by the Soviet regime against Crimean Tatars. Considering the present circumstances, this is a particularly sad day, since the people native to Crimea have lost their homeland again and are persecuted. The Parliament of Latvia has recognised the deportations of Crimean Tatars as genocide. Like before, Latvia will continue to pursue a policy of non‑recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea to keep this issue on the current international agenda, stressed Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, in a meeting with Crimean Tatars in capital Kiev during an official visit to Ukraine.

On Tuesday, 18 May, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima adopted a statement on the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestinians, calling for an end to the armed conflicts and all forms of violence that endanger the lives of innocent civilians.

The Ukrainian people have chosen to follow the path of democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration. It is a choice for which you have paid the highest price – in human lives. This choice must be respected, and we are here to confirm that Ukraine can always count on steadfast support from Latvia, emphasised Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, at a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Razumkov during an official visit to Ukraine.
