On Tuesday, 1 November, the 14th Saeima elected Edvards Smiltēns as the Speaker of the Saeima.
A total of 82 MPs voted in favour of Edvards Smiltēns as the Speaker of the Saeima in an open procedure with ballot papers, and 11 MPs voted against.
The Speaker represents the Saeima, chairs its sittings, and keeps them in order. In the absence of the Speaker, one of the two Deputy Speakers performs these duties upon mutual agreement. The Speaker of the Saeima acts as the President of Latvia until the Saeima elects a new President of Latvia. The Speaker of the Saeima also acts as the President of Latvia if the latter is abroad or otherwise prevented from performing their duties.
